Title: Engineers (Chapter Three)
Author: grey_sw
Rating: PG-13
Pairing/Characters: Alan Bradley, Clu, Rinzler, Jarvis, Alan/Kevin, Alan/Clu
Spoilers: TRON: Legacy
Word Count: ~4500
Summary: When they found his car outside Flynn's arcade, with his pager -- the one Kevin had always told him to sleep with, just in case -- sitting on the seat, there'd be no search. No brave mission to carry on his memory, no t-shirts emblazoned with Bradley Lives. It looked too much like suicide.
Notes: For winzler. This is a work in progress, and it's going be epic, so please stick with me! Thanks to noctaval, mochisquish, and dw_lj for beta-reading!

They took a Recognizer out over the city.Collapse )

Fic rec: Warehouse 13/Community

Fans of Community and/or Warehouse 13 should check out perdiccas' crossover, crash course in interplanetary diplomacy. She nails the voices from both shows in a way that's both effortless and totally hilarious!

It was the worst elevator ride of Alan Bradley's life.Collapse )

Dear Yuletide Writer

Dear Yulegoat,

First of all, let me just say that I'm super-excited to read what you come up with, no matter what it is! I'm not real picky, so just relax and go with whatever moves you -- as they say, optional details are optional. You can find my fic here if you'd like to get a better idea of what I enjoy. I've also listed some general likes/dislikes at the end of this post, so please read on!

Tron Legacy: Flynn's desktop

I was just herping the derp over at tumblr, about this image of Flynn's desktop, and I figured I might as well save it for posterity (and later linking):

IntroCollapse )

For what it's worth, Flynn makes perfect sense as a vi user (it's Zen, maaaan! [:wq!), whereas Clu, as his opposite, definitely uses emacs (the Games are lethal just because he needed to free up space on the Grid for his 200kB .emacs file and his tricked-out elisp Perfect System.)

At any rate, all of the above are perfectly cromulent Unix commands (or are Flynn's own files, but make sense in context), so I might as well translate 'em into English for you:

488 cd /opt/LLL/controller/laser/ (Flynn changed the current directory to /opt/LLL/controller/laser/)
489 vi LLLSDLaserControl.c (he edited the source code for the laser control program)
490 make (he compiled the laser control program)
491 make install (and installed it)
492 ./sanity_check (and tested it)
493 ./configure -o test.cfg (built a new config file for it)
494 vi test.cfg (edited the config file)
495 vi ~/last_will_and_testament.txt (edited his last will & testament)
496 cat /proc/meminfo (checked the used/free/etc memory on the system)
497 ps -a -x -u (listed all the running processes on the system)
498 kill -9 2207 (killed process #2207. -9 forces an immediate kill without giving the process a chance to run its pre-shutdown code, if any)
499 kill 2208 (killed process #2208, allowing it to take its own sweet time shutting down)
500 ps -a -x -u (listed all the running processes again, presumably to make sure 2207 and 2208 were gone)
501 touch /opt/LLL/run/ok (this creates an empty file called /opt/LLL/run/ok -- the laser control program probably checks for this as a failsafe, which ensures that the laser can't accidentally fire until Flynn's ready)
502 LLLSDLaserControl -ok1 (runs the laser)

The only thing I don't get is why he'd have wanted to change the laser control program (or his LW&T) that day, though -- that'd seem like the ultimate in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! I wonder if this might have anything to do with his excitement the night before ("I've cracked it!")...?
Wow, did I just whip right by the nerd singularity and into the nerd black hole, or what? :P

edit: oh, yeah, and "SolarOS" is an obvious-but-not-copyright-infringing reference to SunOS, a UNIX which ran on the Sun-4 series of servers & desktops. In particular, the SPARCserver 690MP looks a bit like the one(s) Sam plugged into at the end, and those servers did in fact have the (derpy) feature where you could make a desk out of them.
